The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) football team are the 2025 Sickle Cell Awareness Soccer Tournament champions, after defeating Kisumu Polytechnic 1-0 in a tightly contested final at the Moi Stadium, in Kisumu on Saturday, September 27.

The much-anticipated squad for national football team, Harambee Stars’ upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers has been unveiled with a mix of domestic league players and those plying their trade abroad.

Head coach Benny McCarthy has selected a 24-man squad that will face Burundi on October 9 and Ivory Coast on October 14 in group F encounters.

The squad is led by captain Michael Ogada Olunga, who plays for Al-Arabi in Qatar.

The selection highlights a significance on the domestic league, with giants Gor Mahia leading the pack with key players. 

They include goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, defenders Sylvester Owino and Michael Kibwage and midfielders Alpha Onyango, Ben Stanley and Austin Odhiambo.

A notable feature of the squad is the players in European leagues, indicating the growing diaspora of Kenyan talent.

Key names include defender Collins Sichenje (FK Vojvodina, Serbia), winger William Lunkupae (VPS, Finland) and rising star Ryan Ogam (Wolfsberger AC, Austria). Timothy Ouma of Poznan FC has also been added to the line-up.

The defensive unit boasts the experience of Abud Omar and Daniel Sakari, both of Kenya Police. A new face, Vincent Harper who plays for English League two side Walsall has also been added to the squad.

Wingers: William Lenkupae, Job Ochieng, Boniface Muchiri

Strikers: Michael Olunga, Ryan Ogam, Lawrence Okoth

Harambee Stars is already out of contention for a 2026 World Cup slot.  The team is ranked 5th with 9 points after 8 matches.

Ivory Coast are top of the group with 20 points.

The stage is set for this year’s edition of the Dala Sevens in Kisumu, with 16 teams expected to battle it out for top honours.

Jomo Kenyatta International Sports ground in Mamboleo will host the competition from Saturday, September 13 to Sunday, September 14, 2025.

The tourney will serve as the grand finale of the national SportPesa 7s circuit.

Ahead of the competition, Dala Sevens hosts, Kisumu Rugby Club management committee paid a courtesy visit to governor Anyang’ Nyong’o for a discussion on sports development and sports tourism in the county.

Nyong’o said his administration will ensure maximum security during the event, with over 10,000 fans expected to attend.

Dala 7s Pools

Pool A: Kabras Sugar, CUEA Monks, MMUST, Nakuru RFC

Pool B: Daystar Falcons, MSC Rugby, Kenya Harlequin, Nondescripts

Pool C: KCB Rugby, Mwamba RFC, Homeboyz, Embu RFC

Pool D: Strathmore Leos, Menengai Oilers, Impala RFC, Kisumu RFC

Over the weekend, Nairobi’s Thika Road-based side KCB Rugby claimed their third 2025 Sportpesa 7s title, after edging out debutant finalists Daystar 20-10 to win the Kabeberi 7s at the RFUEA grounds.  

It marked KCB’s fourth consecutive Kabeberi Sevens win, with the successful run having started in 2022.

KCB beat Mwamba 35-07 while Daystar edged out Menengai Oilers 24-19 enroute to the final.

Kabras Football Club will be out to defend the Dala 7s title.
